THIS WEEKS FEATURED ARTIST IS KEVIN NZUMBI MUTEMI
Kevin is a pastel artist based in Heidelberg, creating vibrant, contemporary explorations in pastels, pushing the different forms of the medium into painterly textures, using colour to convey feeling and atmosphere. His latest project sees him exploring beyond figuration and investigating quiet, still moments of everyday life. His scenes are intimate and imbued with the weight of intention and personal meaning, yet familiar and accessible for the viewer to connect with both the artist and the scene.
Kevin uses his colour palette in a conversation with his mark-making, giving an expressionistic feel to his pieces. Clearly inspired by expressionism and fauvism the colours in his works are both bright and balanced, vivid but based in reality, giving a sense of heightened emotion but not exaggeration.
In his current collection, Kevin uses a lovely soft palette that renders the images quiet and serene despite their brightness, allowing for the natural colours to sing through in his fresh style. An examination of fizzing, quiet power, his scenes seem calm, drawn into the stillness through his frenetic lines. His marks create signs of life and breath even in the absence of people, almost a landscape of humans devoid of people, the silence becomes the subject.
Winner of the Catalogue Award First Prize and the President's Prize at 2025's Pastel Society Annual Exhibition with two of his figurative works, Kevin is pushing into new territories, expanding his practice in exciting joyful ways.
