SUE BRANCH - COLOURS OF THE DOWNS
Sue Branch's Colours of the Downs demonstrates her playful, bright take on oil painting while capturing the beauty and character of the South Downs. She captures the movement in the land and the air in stylish sweeps of paint, rendering the simple forms and blocks of brazen colour in a Fauvist-inspired manner. This painting speaks of someone who has a great affinity or affection for the land she paints. The Downs are lovingly observed, and the simplified shapes work to great effect to highlight the characteristics of the landscape in a simplified, contemporary language. Sue's colour choices are reduced but powerful and effective to give a sense of both heat and cool as the shadows of oscillating clouds pass over the land, creating the feeling of British summer. Sue has a rounded sense of her own style in this piece, with broad textured brush strokes, a naivety that speaks to someone open to experimentation and play, and a strong sense of feeling and character in her subject.
