MICHAEL ISLES

THE SPACE BETWEEN THE LINES

Archival Print, Limited Edition

Michael Isles' photograph The Space Between The Lines is a silent riot of lines, squares and edges. Sharp and brutal, it shows an urban conversation in metal and glass. Cropped to a landscape view, the power of the building's height is contained, leaving the viewer's mind to decide how domineering or imposing the structure is. Michael uses this restriction, the inability to see the tops of the buildings, the frame bursting, to give his composition an intimacy and overbearing, almost claustrophobic atmosphere. Without seeing the sky, the viewer is able to understand an overcast day, the lack of contrast in the reflections, and no bright lights bouncing around shining metal. Michael uses this beautifully to flatten the image into pattern and shape, to allow the viewer to read the repeating lines and space as an idea rather than just a subject.
